Phonetic American Alphabet Simplified
(PAAS) (Also called FoNiKSPeL)
Ever wish we had a simple phonetic alphabet to supplement written English? One where the same letter didn't have several posible sounds or where you don't have exceptions to the exception to the rules? Read on!
Some years (decades) ago I read an article in "Reader's Digest" that pointed out how colonial settlers spelled things the way they sounded. (Remember the tree markings which many believe were made by Daniel Boone. " D. Boon Cilled a bar ...... 1760" and 43 years later "D. Boon kilt a bar ......1803")
Grandpa Boone & Conner(Not really Boones)
They were coming close to having a phonetic alphabet but then along came the great scholar, Noah Webster with his Dictionary which froze the way words should be spelled.
While thinking back on that article, I decided to see how many changes it would take to convert our current alphabet to a phonetic one. I was surprised to see how few would be required. The results are on the next page.
